Alton’s Encounter

I grew up in a housing project located in the lower 9th ward of New Orleans Louisiana.  As a youngster, my grandmother got us up early on Sunday mornings to attend church services where I accepted Jesus and was baptized. But soon after that, we moved away and I stopped attending church. My lust for women and a lavish lifestyle took me away from the church and into the streets. I began carrying a gun, selling drugs and rebelling against everything. I slowly began cutting class to impress peers which could care less about me which ultimately led to failing my 9th year of high school.

As a lost teen, I grew up to be a lost young man, seeking only to satisfy my fleshly lusts. I lied to myself saying “I’m finding myself” when all I found was sin and death. I had everything that the world says should make me happy, but I felt completely empty on the inside. I turned to him who I knew could help. I asked Jesus to come into my life and he did. The Lord brought my uncle into my life to challenge and encourage me to do better.  He presented me with the truth about who I was based the men in our family who had been tempted with the same lusts of women and money and assured me I was headed down the wrong path.

My uncle mentored me with the Word of God which helped me redirect my path towards a life filled with peace and joy. My uncle gave me the scripture Mathew 5:14-16 You are the light of the world a city on the hill cannot be hidden neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl instead they put it on a stand and it gives light to everyone in the house, in the same way let your life shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your father in heaven. None of us are saved by our works or deeds but all of us have sinned and fallen short or missed the mark and that’s the very reason Jesus died on the cross, to save all of us. You don’t have to do or be good to qualify for God, its God’s grace and love.
